The client’s brief requested a modern portrait of one of their school’s patron saints, St. Dominic Savio. As Savio lived before the advent of photography, there was little visual reference to work from, save a few historical paintings and artist’s impressions of Savio’s appearance. Taking a modern spin on this tradition, the reference used was derived through the use of modern algorithm-driven image generation software. The exhibition showcased work from 30 Western Australian mural artists. Each artist was given free reign to paint a wall within the studio. Prior to painting, a board of MDF was fixed to the wall. Once the mural was completed, the board was removed, framed and rehung in place to create a removable detail of the mural to be sold at the opening event. This piece was painted in the studio on multiple separate panels and then assembled onto a steel skeleton structure on site. The three artists approached Fremantle council with a proposal to create a large-scale mural on a prominent wall in North Fremantle. The wall was previously known as a graffiti hotspot and attracted a large amount of tagging and vandalism.
